About Wang Chao
Wang Chao was born in 1974 in Shandong province, China and graduated from the China Academy of Art in 1998. He received his masters degree in 2007 and is currently Director of the printmaking department’s Purple Bamboo Studio which researches and practices techniques of multi-block colour printing. He is a leading practitioner of traditional woodblock printing techniques in China today which is a method of relief design combined with colour printing.
His work is internationally recognised having exhibited in the British Museum and in Tokyo, lectured on print work in Belfast, as well as providing artwork for the front cover of a Penguin classic title, Fortress Besieged. He is currently exhibiting at the Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London.
Wang Chao donated a deckchair designs to Deckchair Dreams in 2010. His work uses patterns from Chinese painting and was made through traditional method of print. The images all come from Chinese traditional printing materials, such as Chinese New Year Painting and ancient books in the studies of the literati, the new combination of which possesses a unique taste from the East.
