About Sam McEwen
Sam McEwen studied painting at S.V.A. in New York, reaching early acclaim as a young painter in the eighties, represented by Tony Shafrazi. Since returning to England in the nineties she has concentrated on commissions and private sales, while demand has led her into countless other areas and projects: printmaking, fabric design, interiors and wall paintings, carpet design and t-shirts.
Sam has exhibited in London, at the Groucho Club, Cross Street Gallery, and Simon Finch Art. Her paintings have been commissioned by Jigsaw; Tokyo: JAM; Simon Finch Art; Woody's, London and Renshaw Hiscox, London. She has created paintings and textiles for Jean Patou, Paris and t-shirts for Up and Co, NY.
Her work is known for the simple and dynamic isolation of images, often in a superb colour field. Her subject has recently been enormous flowers, a provocative exploration of colour and shape.
Sam donated a design as part of Deckchair Dreams 2007. About her design, she told us:
It started as a daisy, sitting in the Park with all the daisies. It definitely isn't a daisy, but that is where it began."
